Die Arbeit im Atelier besteht nicht nur daraus, den Pinsel oder Malspachtel zu schwingen und Farbe auf Leinwand, Papier oder Holzpanels zu bringen. Immer wieder muss man ein paar Schritte zurücktreten und das Bild betrachten und bewerten.
Auch wenn bei gegenständlichen Bildern die Erkennbarkeit des Motivs im Vordergrund steht, kann man sich ähnliche Fragen stellen wie bei eher abstrakten Bildern, z.B.
- Wie ist die Verteilung der Tonwerte im Bild?
- Habe ich eine interessante Komposition erreicht?
- Wie wird der Blick des Betrachters gelenkt und gibt es einen Schwerpunkt, einen Fokus im Bild?
Nachdem ich an meinen sechs kleinen Leinwänden beim letzten Mal weitgehend intuitiv gearbeitet habe, mache ich mir jetzt ein paar Gedanken zu Tonwerten und den verschiedenen Flächen und Formen. Im Video könnt ihr mir dabei folgen.
Für die nächste Mal-Session habe ich nun Anhaltspunkte, wie ich die einzelnen Bilder weiterbringen kann. Und ich habe noch eine Idee, wie ich ihnen ein zusätzliches Element und damit so etwas wie eine Bildaussage gebe. Mal sehen, ob es funktioniert.
Image analysis: tonal value contrasts and area distribution
The work in the studio does not only consist of swinging the brush or palette knife and applying paint to canvas, paper or wooden panels. Again and again you have to step back and look at and evaluate the painting.
Even if the recognizability of the motif is in the foreground with representational paintings, you can ask yourself similar questions as with more abstract paintings, e.g.
- How is the distribution of the tonal values in the painting?
- Have I achieved an interesting composition?
- How is the viewer’s gaze directed and is there a focal point in the painting?
After working mainly intuitively on my six small canvases last time, I now think about tonal values and the different areas and shapes. You can follow me in the video.
For the next painting session, I now have clues as to how I can advance the individual paintings. And I have an idea of how I can give them an additional element and thus something like a visual statement. Let’s see if it works.
