“Geht das nicht auch in kleiner?”
Diese Frage hat mir eine Freundin beim offenen Atelier gestellt. Sie und ihr Mann waren begeistert von “Strandschätze oder Frieden finden”, das ein Format von 80 x 80 cm hat.
"Strandschätze oder Frieden finden" (Acryl auf Leinwand, 80 x 80 cm)Die beiden haben zuhause geschaut, aber für das Original-Format fand sich kein passender Platz. Daher die Frage, ob ich ein entsprechendes Bild in – sagen wir 40 x 40 cm malen kann.
Ich gestehe, ich habe erstmal gezweifelt. Und dann habe ich mir ein paar Fragen gestellt:
- Schaffe ich es, den Hintergrund, der durch einen “happy accident”, eine Art Zufall entstanden ist, in ähnlicher Weise zu reproduzieren?
- Funktioniert die herunterlaufende Farbe auf dem kleineren Format? Die Tropfen und Spuren werden etwa dieselbe Breite haben, wie beim großen Bild. Aber in Relation zur neuen Bildgröße wirken sie kräftiger.
- Was wird aus den Steinen? Ich möchte sie nicht verkleinern, also werden weniger von ihnen einen Platz auf der Leinwand finden. Was für einen Effekt hat das auf die Gesamtkomposition?
Diese Fragen konnte ich zwar theoretisch stellen, aber nur praktisch beantworten.
Also habe ich mir drei gebrauchte Leinwände genommen und einfach angefangen. Das konntet ihr hier im Video sehen.
Das Ergebnis: Drei Bilder im Format 40 x 40 cm, am letzten Wochenende frisch fertig geworden.
Fragen zu stellen nach Variationsmöglichkeiten hilft uns beim Malen weiter.
- Fragen nach Größe oder Format (Könnte ich das Bild auch im schmalen Hochformat malen?)
- Fragen nach Farben (Wie wirkt das Bild, wenn ich hauptsächlich neutrale Farben verwende?)
- Fragen nach der Perspektive (Und wenn der Blick statt von schräg oben mal aus der Froschperspektive auf mein Motiv fällt?)

What if … – Questions to a painting
“Isn’t that also possible in smaller?”
A friend of mine asked me this question at the open studio. She and her husband loved “Beach Treasures or Finding Peace”, which is 80 x 80 cm in size.
"Beach Treasures or Finding Peace" (Acryl auf Leinwand, 80 x 80 cm)The two looked around at home, but there was no suitable place for the original format. Hence the question of whether I can paint a corresponding picture in – let’s say 40 x 40 cm.
I confess I had my doubts at first. And then I asked myself a few questions:
- Can I reproduce the background, which was created by a “happy accident”, in a similar way?
- Does the dripping color work on the smaller format? The drops and tracks will be about the same width as in the big painting. But in relation to the new image size, they appear stronger.
- What will become of the stones? I don’t want to shrink them, so fewer of them will find a place on the canvas. What effect does that have on the overall composition?
I could ask these questions theoretically, but only answer them practically.
So I took three used canvases and just started. You could see that here in the video.
The result: three paintings in the format 40 x 40 cm, freshly finished last weekend.
Asking questions about possible variations helps us to paint.
- Questions about size or format (Could I also paint the picture in narrow portrait format?)
- Questions about colors (How does the picture look if I mainly use neutral colors?)
- Questions about the perspective (And if the view falls on my motif from a frog’s perspective instead of from diagonally above?)
