Why do I paint what I paint? I never used to ask myself this question. I just painted what I felt like doing. I looked for a motif from my photos that appealed to me and tried to depict it in watercolors or later in acrylics.

But I didn’t ask myself why I chose this photo and not that one. Or why I like to paint landscapes, but not people. I haven’t reflected on my painting.

Maybe it wasn’t necessary at that time because it was about doing and learning. I practically tried out the use of colors on practical examples. Still, I didn’t paint anything, but something that interested me.

When I look back today, I know why it was precisely certain landscape photos that I chose. The motifs awakened memories of the feelings I had in those places. Positive feelings.

However, these sensations did not flow into the paintings because I depicted superficially what I saw in the photos. That is probably the reason why I see these paintings as more decorative today.

This year I dealt with my “longing for the sea”, wanted to get away from pure representation and therefore went into abstraction. Maybe next year I should try to incorporate these new possibilities into the old motifs. – Sounds a bit like a new kind of project, right? We will see.

This time of the year seems to be predestined for looking back and looking forward, for reviewing and making plans. Do you feel the same? Feel free to write me something about it in the comments.
