Dieses Zitat von David Hockney passt für mich gut zu dem von Eugène Delacroix gestern.
Während Delacroix über die Brücke zwischen Maler und Betrachter, also die Verbindung spricht, steht hier das Wort “teilen” im Mittelpunkt. Aber eben nicht im Sinn von “trennen”, sondern von “mitteilen”, von “weitergeben”.
Kunst ist eine Form von Kommunikation. Maler*innen versuchen durch ihre Bilder mitzuteilen, wie sie die Welt – oder zumindest einen Aspekt der Welt – sehen.
Ob es die Impressionisten waren, die ihre Eindrücke von Landschaften, ihre Atmosphäre, ihr Licht darstellen wollten. Oder die Expressionisten, die durch kräftige Farben und überzeichnete Formen ihre subjektiven Gefühle zum Ausdruck brachten. Oder die Farbfeldmaler, die sich mit der Wirkung der Farbe an sich beschäftigten.
Aber es geht nicht nur ums “Mitteilen”, nicht nur darum, etwas von sich zu geben.
Sie alle wollten, dass die Betrachter sehen, was sie sehen, dass sie spüren, was in den Künstler*innen vor sich ging – und dass sie mit eigenen Gedanken und Empfindungen darauf reagieren – wobei wir wieder bei der Verbindung sind.
Und das Spannende: Als Betrachter*in kann ich das jederzeit tun und immer wieder, denn die Werke sind nicht so flüchtig wie gesprochene Worte.
This quote from David Hockney goes well with that of Eugène Delacroix yesterday.
While Delacroix talks about the bridge between painter and viewer, i.e. the connection, the word “share” is the focus here. But not in the sense of “separate”, but of “communicate”, of “pass on”.
Art is a form of communication. Painters try to convey through their paintings how they see the world – or at least one aspect of the world.
Whether it was the impressionists who wanted to portray their impressions of landscapes, their atmosphere, their light. Or the expressionists, who expressed their subjective feelings through strong colors and exaggerated forms. Or the color field painters who dealt with the effect of color itself.
But it’s not just about “telling”.
They all wanted the viewer to see what they see, that they feel what was going on inside the artist – and that they respond to it with their own thoughts and feelings – where we are back on the connection.
And the exciting thing: As a viewer, I can look for this connection at any time and again and again, because the works are not as fleeting as spoken words.
